21 Million Miniverse Toy Sets Recalled for Safety Hazard
In June 2024, MGA Entertainment recalled recalled about 21 million Miniverse Make It Mini Toy Sets due to a safety hazard and high levels of toxic chemicals called acrylates.
What is the Problem?
The recalled Miniverse toy sets contain liquid resins that a user is supposed to cure, or harden, into a form that resembles a miniature piece of food, kitchen appliance, or lifestyle item.
The problem is that the liquid resins pose a safety hazard when they are touched, swallowed, or inhaled by a child or adult user.
Miniverse Liquid Resins Pose Safety Hazard
The liquid resins “can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation or sensitization when inhaled, touched, or ingested by children or adults,” according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Toxic Chemical Acrylates Found in Miniverse Liquid Resins
The liquid resins in the recalled Miniverse toys also contain high levels of toxic chemicals called acrylates, according to the CPSC. The liquid resins contain the acrylates (hydroxyethylmethacrylate “HEMA” and isobornyl acrylate “IBOA”) in amounts prohibited in children’s products by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
Once the liquid resins harden, they no longer pose this safety hazard, according to the recall notice.
How Many People Were Injured?
There were 26 reports of incidents, including people who reported skin burns and irritation, and respiratory irritation, with one report that a consumer’s asthma was triggered.
What is the Risk?
- Skin burns
- Skin irritation
- Breathing problems
- Respiratory irritation
- Coughing
- Asthma
- Eye irritation
- And more
Where Were They Sold?
The recalled Miniverse Make It Mini Toy Sets were sold nationwide at Target, Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar General, ALDI, Hobby Lobby, other stores, and online at Amazon.com from October 2022 through June 2024.
