Neutrogena Makeup Wipes Recalled for Infection Risk

In October 2025, Neutrogena announced a Class II recall for about 1,312 cases of Neutrogena® Makeup-Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes due to a risk of bacteria contamination that may pose a risk of infections.

What Happened?

No infections were reported when the recall was initiated on September 19, 2025. Neutrogena explained that “during an internal investigation, the firm discovered that the product test positive for Pluralibacter gergoviae,” according to the recall.

How To Identify Recalled Neutrogena Makeup Wipes

The recall involves the following Neutrogena Makeup Wipes:

  • Neutrogena Makeup Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes
  • Plant-Based Compostable Towelettes
  • Sold in a twin-pack with 25 wipes in each package
  • LOT 1835U6325A
  • Product Quantity: 1,312 cases, with 12 units per case.
  • Distributed in Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

What is the Risk?

While the FDA has categorized this recall as “Class II,” meaning the agency believes there is only a mid-level risk of health problems, anyone who is exposed to Pluralibacter gergoviae can get sick.

This bacteria is opportunistic, which means that serious infections primarily occur in people with vulnerable immune systems, chronic illnesses, medical conditions that interfere with their body’s ability to fight off an infection, or people who are having surgical procedures.

Types of Infections Linked to Bacteria Contamination

Pluralibacter gergoviae can get into the body and cause infections through the eyes, wounded skin, or other pathways. It has been linked to eye infections, nasal infections, sepsis (bloodstream infections), respiratory diseases, and urinary tract infections, which may be life-threatening or deadly.

Bacteria Contamination in Cosmetics

Pluralibacter gergoviae is becoming a particular problem for the cosmetics industry because it can survive exposure to parabens, which are preservative ingredients that manufacturers commonly add to cosmetics to kill bacteria and fungi. This has recently led to a recalls for Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer and shampoo products.

Antibiotic-Resistant Infections

Another problem is that Pluralibacter gergoviae is often resistant to multiple antibiotics, including penicillin and many other antibiotics, which can make infections more difficult to treat. This increases the risk of severe complications for people who are infected.

What Should I Do?

If you use Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes, look for the Lot Code that is printed on your product. If your makeup wipes have Lot Code 1835U6325A, do not use them. You can throw them away or contact Neutrogena for more information.
