According to the Associated Press, the number of deaths among the nation’s oil and gas field workers has risen at an alarming rate. Oil field and oil rig workers are surrounded by hazards. Based on information for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, at least 598 oil field and rig workers died on the job between 2002 and 2007. During that period, the number of deaths per year rose by around 70 percent, from 72 victims in 2002 to 125 in 2006 and a preliminary count of 120 in 2007.
Not only is the numbers of workers on the rise, from 290,000 in 2002 to 428,000 in 2007, but the rates of injuries and death is also on the rise. There are several factors that keep pushing the number of injured and killed higher and higher. These factors include: a dramatic increase in drilling, an influx of new and inexperienced workers, an environment where workplace safety lapses are common, and drug and alcohol use among workers.
