What is the problem?

Business is booming in the oil & gas industry in Texas and Oklahoma, with thousands of well-paying jobs available. Unfortunately, the number of workers who were seriously injured or died on the job has also skyrocketed. In many cases, the problem is that oil companies are sacrificing the safety of their workers to maximize production and profits. There is no excuse for cutting corners when lives are at risk.

What is the Risk of Death?

There were about 475,000 oil and gas workers in the U.S. in 2010. The fatality-rate is about 27.5 deaths per 100,000 workers, which is about 7-times higher than the risk of death for all other workers. Between 2003 and 2009, there were 716 oil and gas workers who were killed on the job. The most common cause of death was highway vehicle accidents (29%), being hit by tools or equipment (20%), explosions (8%), crushed by machinery (7%), and falls (6%), according to a study by the CDC.

Oil Drilling Rig Blowouts

Blowouts occur when a drilling rig taps into a high-pressure zone of gas or oil, causing an uncontrollable burst of pressure. Blowouts frequently destroy the drilling equipment. They can also spark a massive explosion that seriously injures or kills any workers nearby.

Gas Leaks, Fires and Explosions

Fires and explosions are some of the most common serious accidents in oil drilling. Leaking gas lines and improperly-joined pipelines can easily catch on fire. It only takes a single spark to ignite crude oil, natural gas, and highly-flammable vapors. Storage tanks are also very dangerous, especially if a worker has to weld something on the tank.

Hydro-Fracking Accidents

Hydraulic fracturing (“hydro-fracking”) is a new technique for extracting natural gas and crude oil. It involves injecting a mix of sand, toxic chemicals, and water deep underground to break up shale. Workers are at risk of serious injury and death from blowouts, toxic chemical exposure, faulty equipment, and a lack of safety precautions.

Offshore Drilling Rig Injuries

Offshore drilling is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Working on an offshore oil rig has all of the normal hazards of drilling, plus the risks of working in the ocean — hurricanes, storms, rig collapse, sinking, and capsizing as a result of blowouts or fires. Workers who fall off a catwalk can also be instantly swept out to sea.

Highway Vehicle Accidents

Highway motor vehicle accidents are the #1 cause of injury and death for oil & gas workers. From 2003 to 2009, there were 202 people who died in work-related vehicle crashes, which is about 8.5-times higher than the risk for workers in all other industries. Many of the deaths occurred in light-duty trucks where the victims were not wearing a seatbelt, according to a study by the CDC.
