Oriya Organics Superfood Protein Medley Recalled

July 2, 2014 — Oriya Organics Superfood Protein Medley has been recalled because it contains organic sprouted chia seed powder that may be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause life-threatening food poisoning.

The recalled products include:

  • Oriya Organics Superfood Protein Medley: 21.2 oz, UPC Code:85370100401, with Lot #: A14314 and an expiration date of 05/23/2015.
  • Products were sold at retailers in Texas and Louisiana and directly to consumers in Texas, Arkansas, Illinois, Florida, New York, Louisiana, and Virginia.

Chia Seed Salmonella Outbreak

Organic sprouted chia seed powder has been linked to a Salmonella outbreak that began in January. In June, health officials in the United States and Canada said they were investigating 65 illnesses linked to the outbreak. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already recalled over a dozen products from three manufacturers. Click here to read more.

The problem is that chia seeds and bacteria grow in the same conditions — a warm, moist environment — and Salmonella is a relatively common pathogen. When Salmonella contaminates sprouted chia seeds, it is not destroyed when the seeds are dried or powdered. When people consume raw products, they can develop food poisoning.

The FDA warns that Salmonella infections can be deadly, especially for people with weak immune systems, children, or older adults. Most healthy adults develop symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea (may be bloody), and fever for a few days. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and cause arterial infections.
