Walmart Recalls Great Value Chia Seeds for Salmonella Risk

On May 10, 2024, Natural Sourcing International voluntarily recalled one lot of Great Value® Organic Chia Seeds that were sent to Walmart stores nationwide due to a risk of Salmonella food poisoning.

What is the Problem?

No illnesses were reported at the time of the recall. The company recalled certain 32-oz. pouches of Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds due to the “potential presence of Salmonella that may be in some of the finished products,” according to the recall.

What is the Risk?

Chia seeds are often eaten raw, which poses a risk of food poisoning because there is no cooking step that would destroy heat-sensitive bacteria such as Salmonella.

People who eat raw chia seeds that are contaminated with Salmonella may develop a serious or even life-threatening infection. The risk is highest for young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA.

How To Identify Recalled Chia Seeds From Walmart

The recall involves 32-ounce pouches of Walmart’s store-brand Great Value® Organic Black Chia Seeds that were sold nationwide.

Customers can check the label on the back panel of the pouch. The label has Lot Code “24095 C018,” Expiration Date October 30, 2026, and “Product of Uganda.” The product has UPC 078742300665.

Salmonella Symptoms & Complications

Salmonella infections are not usually life-threatening for healthy adults and most people recover within 4-7 days without needing medical treatment. However, people can develop fatal complications.

According to the FDA, symptoms usually include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Salmonella infections can result in life-threatening dehydration due to nausea and vomiting, bloodstream infections, arterial infections (infected aneurysms), endocarditis, arthritis, or death.
