June 16, 2014 — Health officials in the United States and Canada are currently investigating 65 cases of food poisoning linked to organic sprouted chia seed powder.
The Public Health Agency in Canada has reported two new strains of Salmonella linked to the illnesses. According to a report:
“44 cases have been reported in British Columbia (10), Alberta (5), Ontario (26) and Quebec (3). Six cases have been hospitalized; five cases have been discharged and have recovered or are recovering.”
In addition, there are 21 cases of salmonellosis under investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as of June 9. At least two people have been hospitalized, but fortunately no deaths.
A variety of products have been recalled. Click here for a list of recalled products. Recalls include several types of smoothie mixes and Organic Sprouted Chia Powder (Navitas Naturals), Organic Traditions Sprouted Chia Seed Powder (Health Matters America), and Sprouted Tri-Omega Superfood (Green Smoothie Girl).
The recalls follow an outbreak of E. coli that was linked to raw clover sprouts. At least 17 people were sickened, mostly in Washington and Idaho, after eating sandwiches prepared with sprouts.
Sprouts are a common source of food poisoning outbreaks because bacteria and seeds both like to grow in hot, humid environments. In addition, sprouts are often eaten raw or dried.
