Ozempic Stomach Paralysis Lawsuits
Lawsuits are being filed against pharmaceutical companies by people who developed stomach paralysis after using Ozempic. These lawsuits claim that drug-makers knew (or should have known) about the risk of stomach paralysis from Ozempic, but did not warn patients.
How Does Ozempic Work?
Ozempic works in multiple ways to control diabetes and help people lose weight. It slows down the digestion of food, which helps people feel full longer and eat less food, which helps prevent spikes in blood-sugar, and also reduce the total number of calories eaten per day.
What is the Problem?
Problems can occur when Ozempic slows down digestion too much. There are warnings on the label for Ozempic about “delayed gastric emptying,” but some patients are reporting a severe problem called stomach paralysis. This occurs when food empties too slowly from the stomach into the intestines, resulting in severe nausea and vomiting.
What Do Lawsuits Claim?
Lawsuits have been filed by people who had to be hospitalized due to extreme nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and other symptoms of stomach paralysis. The plaintiffs claim that they never would have used Ozempic if they had known about the risk of stomach paralysis.
What is Stomach Paralysis?
Stomach paralysis, also known as “gastroparesis,” occurs when the movement of food from the stomach into the intestines is abnormally slow. The symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, and malnutrition.
What is Ileus?
Ileus prevents the passage of food through the intestines, but it is not caused by a physical blockage. Instead, ileus is caused by a lack of normal muscle contractions that move food through the intestines.
What is Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction?
An intestinal pseudo-obstruction occurs when nerve or muscle problems slow or stop the movement of food through the intestines. It is not caused by a physical blockage in the intestines.
FDA Updates Label on Ozempic to Include Ileus (Intestinal Obstruction)
In September 2023, the FDA updated the label warnings for Ozempic to include intestinal obstruction, known medically as “ileus,” after 18 reports of this side effect in patients.
The risk of ileus was cited in a study published in May 2023, where researchers found a 3.5-fold increased risk of intestinal obstruction associated with Ozempic and other GLP-1 diabetes drugs.

Can I File a Lawsuit?
You may be eligible to file a lawsuit if you took Ozempic for diabetes or weight-loss and developed stomach paralysis, gastroparesis, ileus, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, or other severe digestive side effects.
Can I Join a Class Action?
Lawsuits involving Ozempic and other GLP-1 diabetes drugs are being filed in U.S. District Courts nationwide, but they may be centralized into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which is similar to a class action lawsuit.
