Ozempic Lawsuit Claims Weight-Loss Drug Caused Stomach Paralysis

In August 2023, a stomach paralysis lawsuit was filed by a woman who claims that Ozempic and Mounjaro caused gastroparesis.

After using the drugs for more than a year, she developed severe gastrointestinal problems and had to be hospitalization multiple times. Her teeth also fell out due to excessive vomiting, her lawsuit claims.

Hundreds of similar claims are being investigated throughout the U.S., according to CBS News. Many victims claim they were unaware of the risk of stomach paralysis (also called “gastroparesis”) because it is not on the label for Ozempic or Mounjaro.

The lawsuit was filed on August 2, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana (Lake Charles Division) — Case No. 2:23-cv-01020.

Diabetes Drugs for Weight Loss: GLP-1 Receptor Agonists

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications were developed for the treatment of type-2 diabetes, but they can also help with weight-loss in overweight individuals.

Experts believe they work by mimicking hormones that stimulate the body to produce insulin, which helps lower blood-sugar levels. They also reduce appetite and cravings.

What is the Problem?

One of the most popular weight-loss drugs is Ozempic® (semaglutide injection), a GLP-1 diabetes drug that became wildly popular for weight-loss within a couple years of hitting the U.S. market in 2018.

Unfortunately, a growing number of Ozempic users are reporting severe gastrointestinal side effects, such as stomach paralysis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and other symptoms.

Overview: What is Gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis, also called “stomach paralysis” or “delayed gastric emptying,” occurs when the movement of food from the stomach into the intestines is very slow or stops completely.

Stomach Paralysis Symptoms

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the symptoms of gastroparesis may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Feeling full after eating just a few bites
  • Continuing to feel full long after eating a meal
  • Poor appetite
  • Vomiting undigested food
  • Heartburn (acid reflux)
  • Weight loss
  • Malnutrition

Complications of Gastroparesis

Stomach paralysis can cause severe, life-threatening complications that may require hospitalization, including dehydration due to vomiting, malnutrition, out-of-control blood sugar levels, bezoars (solid collection of undigested food), and blockages in the stomach or intestines.

List of Weight-Loss Drugs for Diabetes

Here is a list of GLP-1 agonist medications for diabetes that may also help with weight-loss:

This may not be a complete list of GIP and GLP-1 diabetes drugs.

In recent years, drug-makers have been scrambling to develop more medications to add to this popular class of drugs (for example: retatrutide, danuglipron, or lotiglipron) to capitalize on the booming market for diabetes drugs that can also help people lose weight.

Drug-makers are specifically seeking to add more pill-based versions of Ozempic, which would appeal to people who do not want injections.
