UPDATE: Ozempic Linked to NAION, Eye Disease That Can Cause Blindness
In July 2024, a study published in JAMA Ophthalmology warned about a possible link between Ozempic (semaglutide) and an increased risk of an eye disease called NAION that can cause vision loss and blindness.
Ozempic Lawsuits May Be Centralized in MDL
Lawsuits involving stomach paralysis from Ozempic and other GLP-1 diabetes drugs may be centralized into a federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which is similar to a class action lawsuit.
Ozempic Stomach Paralysis Lawsuit Filed in Louisiana
In August 2023, a woman from Louisiana filed a stomach paralysis lawsuit against the makers of Ozempic® and Mounjaro®.
The plaintiff, Jaclyn B., accused the drug-makers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly & Co. of failing to warn her about the risk of stomach paralysis from Ozempic and Mounjaro.
She claims to have suffered extreme nausea, stomach pain, gastrointestinal burning, and vomiting that was so severe, she lost teeth and had to be hospitalized multiple times.
Her lawsuit also claims that she would throw up “whole food hours after eating,” which is a symptom of severe stomach paralysis.
Lawyers are now investigating hundreds of similar claims involving stomach paralysis from Ozempic and other diabetes medications. These lawsuits claim that drug-makers should have known about the risk, but withheld safety information from doctors and patients.
Her lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana (Lake Charles Division) — Case No. 2:23-cv-01020.
What is Ozempic?
Ozempic® (generic: semaglutide) is a once-weekly injection medication for type-2 diabetes that was approved in 2017. It helps lower blood-sugar levels by helping the pancreas make more insulin.
Ozempic is made by the drug-company Novo Nordisk. It is also sold in a higher-dose version called Wegovy. The active ingredient in both medications is semaglutide, which is in a class of diabetes drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists.
What is the Problem?
Ozempic slows down digestion, which can make people feel full longer and less likely to overeat. This is good for helping diabetic people control their blood-sugar levels and manage their weight, but it has also been linked to stomach paralysis and other digestive problems.
Ozempic Can Help People Lose Weight
Ozempic can help people lose weight, according to recent studies. One study found that people who used Ozempic lost about 5 pounds per month — for an average weight-loss of 15 pounds in 3 months, and 27 pounds in 5 months.
What is Stomach Paralysis?
Diabetes and weight-loss drugs have been linked to reports of stomach paralysis, also known as “gastroparesis,” which is when food digestion slows down or stops its normal movement from the stomach into the intestines.
What Happens?
Stomach paralysis is a serious health problem that can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, bloating, and other symptoms. In severe cases, digestion is so slow that the partly-digested food causes an intestinal blockage. Undigested food can also create a hard mass called a bezoar, which can block the stomach or intestinal tract.
Warning Signs & Symptoms of Stomach Paralysis
The symptoms of stomach paralysis may include:
- Feeling full after eating only a few bites of food
- Feeling full long after a meal is finished
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Bloating
- Belching
- Pain in the stomach or upper-abdomen
- Heartburn
- Malnutrition
- Loss of appetite
- Weight-loss
