Where Were Illnesses Reported?

As of July 13, 2023, health officials have confirmed a total of 26 illnesses between February and May 2023 in the following states: California (2), Idaho (5), Missouri (1), Oregon (8), Utah (4), and Washington (6). Four people were hospitalized due to a severe illness. No deaths were reported.

The true number of sick people is likely much higher than the confirmed cases, and people may have gotten sick in other states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Papa Murphy’s Stops Selling Raw Cookie Dough

Papa Murphy’s said it would temporarily stop selling raw Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and S’mores Bar Dough as it investigates the source of the outbreak.

What is the Problem?

Raw dough is a common source of food poisoning due to ingredients like eggs and flour, which may carry disease-causing bacteria. Unlike some edible cookie dough products that are heat-treated to kill bacteria, Papa Murphy’s cookie dough contained raw ingredients like flour and eggs, which may contain Salmonella or E. coli.

Bake Before Eating Papa Murphy’s Cookie Dough

Papa Murphy’s cookie dough products were labeled with the warning “Bake before consuming,” and included instructions on how to bake them at home at temperatures from 350ºF to 375ºF, which is sufficient to kill Salmonella. Even so, cross-contamination in the kitchen and under-cooking of food is a potential hazard with any food item.

How Did People Get Sick?

Fifteen people ate Papa Murphy’s raw chocolate chip cookie dough or raw S’mores bars dough, and 1 person ate baked cookies made with Papa Murphy’s chocolate chip cookie dough, according to the CDC.

Symptoms of a Severe Salmonella Infection

Health officials are warning people who ate Papa Murphy’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough or S’mores Bar dough to call a healthcare provider if they have any symptoms of a severe Salmonella infection:

  • Diarrhea and fever higher than 102ºF
  • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
  • Signs of dehydration, such as:
    • Not peeing much
    • Dry mouth and throat
    • Feeling dizzy when standing up
