Lawsuit Filed by Man Burned by Party Time Recliner from Ashley Furniture

In December 2023, a lawsuit was filed by a man from St. Louis, Missouri, who was severely burned when a Party Time Recliner from Ashley Furniture caused a fire that destroyed his apartment.

The man, Jeffrey M. Jones, awoke in the middle of the night on May 13 to find his apartment engulfed in flames. He survived, but was hospitalized with severe burns on his face, neck, back, and arms.

A few weeks later, Ashley Furniture recalled more than 250,000 “Party Time” loveseats, recliners, and sofas with LED lights that can overheat and cause a fire.

Fire Departments Warn Consumers After Couch Catches on Fire

In July 2023, firefighters in Round Lake, Illinois warned people about a couch recall after a Party Time Sofa from Ashley Furniture caught on fire when the LED lighting in the cup-holder overheated.

What Happened?

On July 18, the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District shared graphic photos of the fire, which completely destroyed the couch and caused severe damage to the home.

Firefighters responded to the fire at around 9:06 a.m. and found smoke coming from the roof of the house. No injuries were reported, but the fire department urged people who own the furniture to “please unplug it immediately.”

Ashley Furniture Recalls Party Time Couches for Fire Hazard

In June 2023, Ashley Furniture recalled about 263,000 electric-powered Party Time® Couches, Loveseats, Sofas and Recliners because the cup-holders with LED lighting can overheat and catch on fire.

How Many Couches Caught on Fire?

At the time of the recall, Ashley Furniture said it was aware of 6 reports of the cup-holder with LED lighting overheating, resulting in fires, smoke damage, and damaged furniture. No injuries were reported, but the problem poses a risk of burn inujries and death.

Since the recall, at least one more fire was reported in Illinois, which caused severe damage to a person’s home.

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled Party Time® furniture products were sold at Ashley Homestores and other furniture stores nationwide from November 2018 through March 2023 for between $900 and $1,800.

What Couches Were Recalled?

Ashley Furniture issued an Important Safety Notice for the following Party Time® Loveseats, Sofas and Recliners:

  • Party Time® Power Sofa: Model Numbers 3700315, 3700415, 3700315C and 3700415C
