April 15, 2019 — At least 93 people were infected with Salmonella after eating pre-cut melon bowls from Target, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Walmart, Amazon/Whole Foods and other stores.
A recall was announced by Caito Foods, LLC, of Indiana — the same company that recalled pre-cut melon bowls in 2018 after another outbreak of Salmonella.
The recalled bowls are clear plastic clamshell containers with pre-cut cantaloupe, honeydew, or watermelon, mixed melons, or melons mixed with other pre-cut fruit.
The recall includes the following products:
- Kroger under the Renaissance Food Group label
- Kroger under Boar’s Head Private Label
- Target under the Garden Highway Label
- Trader Joes under the Trader Joes label
- Walmart under a Freshness Guaranteed label
- Amazon/Whole Foods under the Whole Foods Market Label
The recalled pre-cut melon bowls were distributed to stores and restaurants in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 93 people in 9 states were infected with Salmonella from pre-cut melon bowls since March 4, 2019, including 23 people who were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.
The outbreak strain is Salmonella Carrau, a rare strain that is often found in imported melons, according to the FDA outbreak investigation.
