Samsung Recalls 1.1 Million Ranges for Knobs Turning On Too Easily, 250 Fires Reported

In August 2024, Samsung recalled more than 1.1 million slide-in electric ranges because the knobs can easily turn on if they are accidentally hit by people or pets. The ranges were sold since 2013 nationwide.

What is the Problem?

There were more than 300 reports of the front-mounted knobs on the recalled ranges accidentally being turned on by people, children, or pets. Samsung is only offering knob covers or locks — not a refund — despite the deadly safety hazard these knobs present due to fires.

How Long Until People Die in Kitchen Fires?

The problem has been linked to approximately 250 kitchen fires, including 18 that caused severe property damage to the home. No people died, but 7 fires caused pet deaths.

40 Injuries Linked to Samsung Stove Knobs Turning On

There were also 40 people who reported injures. The type of injuries was not specified in the recall, but kitchen fires can potentially cause:

  • Smoke inhalation
  • Burns
  • Hospitalization
  • Death
  • Severe property damage
  • Time unable to live at home during kitchen repair-work

Samsung Range Knobs Turn On Too Easily, Lawsuits Claim

Lawyers claim that the distance the burner control knobs need to travel to turn “ON” is too small to prevent accidentally turning them on, and Samsung knew about the risk but continued selling the ranges.

One of the earliest class action lawsuits was filed in 2022, by lawyers who claim that Samsung has known that its electric ranges were “susceptible to unintentional activation” since at least 2014.

The Samsung Range Fire Lawsuit was filed on November 21, 2022 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey — Case Number 2:22-cv-04132-CCC-CLW.

Kitchen Fires Caused by Knobs

Customers have been complaining about kitchen fires when Samsung stove knobs accidentally turned on. Samsung has several recommendations to reduce the risk of fires, injuries, and deaths:

  • Use knob-locks or covers to prevent accidentally activating the knobs
  • Leep children and pets away from the knobs
  • Check the knobs to make sure they are off before going to bed or leaving the home
  • Never leave flammable objects on the range when it is not in use

What Should I Do?

Samsung is urging customers to visit the recall website: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/range-knob-kit/, where you can check model numbers on the recalled electric ranges, and request free knob locks or covers.
