Samsung Washing Machine Recall for Fire Hazard

In January 2023, Samsung issued a recall for around 663,000 top-load washing machines that can catch on fire.

What Happened?

The washing machines were recalled after Samsung received 51 reports of “smoking, melting, overheating or fires,” including 3 people with smoke inhalation injuries and 10 reports of property damage. Samsung linked fire hazard to a short-circuit that causes overheating.

Was My Washing Machine Recalled?

Samsung recalled 14 models of Samsung Top-Load Washing Machines with Super Speed Wash, including model series WA49B, WA50B, WA51A, WA52A, WA54A, and WA55A.

They were sold nationwide at retailers like Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, other stores and and online from June 2021 through December 2022 for $900 to $1,500.

What Should I Do?

The repair involves a free software update that will fix a problem with the washers overheating and catching on fire.

In the meantime, Samsung is asking consumers to stop using their washing machines until the software update is installed.

All washers equipped with Wi-Fi and connected to the internet should automatically install the update. If not, Samsung is offering a free dongle that consumers can plug into the washer to update the software.

Samsung Recalls 2.8 Million Washing Machines Linked to Explosions

In November 2016, Samsung recalled about 2.8 million top-load washing machines made between March 2011 and October 2016 because the top can blow off the chassis unexpectedly and cause injuries.

Some consumers described the washing machine explosions like “a bomb went off.” There were 9 reports of serious injuries, including a broken jaw, injured shoulder, other impact or fall-related injuries.

In one case, a woman said her washing machine exploded through the wall of her garage and into her living room.

At the time of the recall, Samsung said it received 733 reports of washing machines experiencing excessive vibration or the top detaching from the washing machine chassis when they lost balance. Lawyers blamed the problem on a support rod was too weak to hold the tub in place during the spin cycle.

The problem led to lawsuits and a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which resulted in a settlement in October 2021. For more information, visit http://www.washermdlsettlement.com/.
