Shimano Recalls 760,000 Bike Cranksets After 6 Injuries Reported
In September 2023, Shimano recalled about 760,000 bicycle cranksets because they can separate and break, causing riders to crash and suffer serious injuries or death.
What is the Problem?
Shimano said it received 4,519 reports of the cranksets separating or breaking. Six people crashed and suffered serious injuries, including broken bones, joint displacement and lacerations.
Was My Shimano Crank Recalled?
The recall involves Shimano 11-Speed Bonded Hollowtech Road Cranksets that were manufactured before July 2019, including:
- Ultegra FC-6800
- Dura-Ace FC-9000
- Ultegra FC-R8000
- Dura-Ace FC-R9100
- FC-R9100P
These cranks were sold individually and on bikes from manufacturers like Trek, Specialized, and others. They were sold at bike stores nationwide from January 2012 to August 2023 for $270 to $1,500.
How To Identify a Recalled Crank
The recalled cranksets have “Ultegra” or “Dura Ace” logos printed on the arm. The affected models were made before July 2019 and have the following two letter production code on backside of the crank arm where the pedals are attached: KF, KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK, KL, LA, LB, LC, LD, LE, LF, LG, LH, LI, LJ, LK, LL, MA, MB, MC, MD, ME, MF, MG, MH, MI, MJ, MK, ML, NA, NB, NC, ND, NE, NF, NG, NH, NI, NJ, NK, NL, OA, OB, OC, OD, OE, OF, OG, OH, OI, OJ, OK, OL, PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF, PG, PH, PI, PJ, PK, PL, QA, QB, QC, QD, QE, QF, QG, QH, QI, QJ, QK, QL, RA, RB, RC, RD, RE, and RF.
What Should I Do?
Immediately stop using the cranksets and contact an authorized Shimano dealer to schedule a free crankset inspection. If the crankset shows signs of bonding separation or delamination, Shimano will provide a free replacement crankset and pay for installation.
What is a Crankset?
The crankset, also called a crank or chainset, is the part of the bicycle that you pedal to move the bike forward. Two crank arms are mounted on either side of the bicycle, attached to the pedals and the bike chain.
Shimano Cranks Have Been Breaking for Years
For many people, the recall of Shimano Ultegra and Dura-Ace cranksets is not news.
Bike riders and news organizations have been reporting terrifying incidents of the cranksets suddenly breaking since at least 2021, but Shimano denied that the cranks were defective, claiming that “Shimano’s engineers are trying to find out if there is a specific cause” and “we have not identified a design problem with the cranks.”
Some organizations also opened their own in-depth investigations into why the Shimano cranksets were breaking.
BikeRadar investigated a report of a Shimano Ultegra 6800 crankset that “failed spectacularly” when outer part of the crank arm separated from the rest of the crank, causing the rider to crash. The rider was uninjured, but the bike was unrideable afterward. Investigators blamed a manufacturing defect and harsh riding.
