September 22, 2022 — Spalding has recalled about 13,400 portable basketball hoops because the backboard can fall off and cause injuries.
The problem is that “welds in the arm attaching the backboard to the pole can fail and cause the backboard to fall, posing an impact injury hazard to consumers,” according to the recall notice.
There were 26 reports of weld failures, including 3 backboards separating from the pole, and 2 people who were injured, according to Spalding.
One person was injured when they were hit by the backboard on their shoulder and upper torso. Another person was hit on the head by the backboard.
The recall involves Spalding Momentous EZ Portable Basketball Goals. The name “Spalding” is printed on the front of the black base and “6E” is molded on the back.
They were sold at Academy and Scheels stores nationwide and online at Spalding.com and Amazon.com from May 2021 through April 2022 for about between $400 and $600.
