Central Valley Meat Co. Recalls Stater Bros. Ground Beef
In November 2019, Central Valley Meat Co. recalled approximately 34,222 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with Salmonella Dublin.
What is the Problem?
The recall was issued after the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) discovered a link between the ground beef and a deadly outbreak of Salmonella illnesses.
Stater Bros. Ground Beef Linked to Deadly Salmonella Outbreak
In August and September 2019, at least 10 people were infected with Salmonella Dublin in 6 states, according to the outbreak investigation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Outbreak is Unusually Severe for Salmonella
The strain of Salmonella does not show antibiotic-resistance, but it is causing unusually severe infections, according to the CDC. Eight of the case-patients were hospitalized, including one person who died in California.

The recall involves several Stater Bros. ground beef items that were produced on July 23, 2019. They are labeled with “EST. 6063A” inside the mark of inspection and sold at retail locations in California.

Salmonella Infections
Infections with Salmonella Dublin can potentially cause diarrhea that is so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. The early symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever.
FSIS is warning all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only eat ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160°F to kill Salmonella.
