UPDATE: Lawsuit Filed by Woman Burned by Sunbeam Heated Blanket

In June 2023, a lawsuit was filed against Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands by a woman from Texas who was severely burned by a recalled Sunbeam Queen-Size Heated Blanket. When she used the blanket for the first time, it overheated and caused 3rd-degree burns on her lower legs that required skin grafts, according to the lawsuit.

Her lawsuit was filed on June 21, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida — Case Number 9:23-cv80949.

Sunbeam Products Recalls 43,000 Heated Blankets

In March 2023, Sunbeam Products recalled about 43,000 queen-sized electric heated blankets because they can overheat or catch on fire, which could cause serious burn injuries.

What Happened?

Sunbeam Products said there were 13 reports of the heated blankets overheating. No injuries were reported, but electric blankets that get too hot could catch on fire or potentially cause serious burn injuries.

Was My Heated Blanket Recalled?

The recall involves Sunbeam® Queen-Size Heated Blankets (Model Number 32810027 and the Sunbeam® logo are printed on the wash label on the blanket). They have a detachable controller.

The blankets came in many colors. They were sold online at Amazon.com and small independent stores nationwide from September 2022 to January 2023 for about $120.

What Should I Do?

Sunbeam Products is asking consumers to immediately stop using and unplug the recalled blankets. You can register online at www.productrecall.sunbeamhome.com to get information on how to receive a full refund.

Sunbeam Heated Blanket Lawsuit Filed in Texas

In March 2021, a lawsuit was filed by a woman who claim that she was severely burned by her Sunbeam Electric Heated Blanket.

The lawsuit was filed by Deborah Z., a woman from Texas who alleges that on March 10, 2019, she was seriously burned when her Sunbeam electric blanket overheated and/or malfunctioned while she slept.

Her Sunbeam Heated Blanket Lawsuit was filed on March 8, 2021 in the District Court of Harris County, Texas — Case Number 2021-13295.

Investigation Accuses Sunbeam of Hiding Fire Hazards of Electirc Blankets

Sunbeam Products was the biggest manufacturer of electric heated blankets in the U.S. since the 1980s. During that time, there were many reports of the blankets overheating or catching on fire.
