In May 2025, multiple recalls were announced for fresh tomatoes that were sold in 14 states due to a risk of Salmonella bacteria contamination, which could result in serious food poisoning illnesses.

Did Anyone Get Sick?
No illnesses were reported, but according to the recalls: “Hanshaw & Capling Farms initiated the recall due to the possible presence of Salmonella in their facility.” Other companies who received tomatoes recalled by Hanshaw & Capling have also issued recalls.
What Companies Announced Recalls?
The recalls were announced by:
- Hanshaw & Capling Farms (H&C Farms) — produce grower located in Immokalee, Florida
- Ray & Mascari Inc. — produce repacking company and distributor located in Indianapolis, Indiana
- Williams Farms Repack Inc. — produce repacking company and distributor located in Lodge, South Carolina
Ray & Mascari Tomato Recall
On May 2, 2025, Ray & Mascari Inc. announced a recall for 4-Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes due to a risk of Salmonella contamination.
The tomatoes were packaged in 20-oz. plastic clamshell containers containing 4 tomatoes per package, with UPC# 7 96553 20062 1.
They were sold by Gordon Food Service Stores in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
Grocery stores can identify the Master Case Label with Lot# RM250424 15250B or Lot# RM250427 15250B. The master case is a cardboard box with a lid, containing twelve 4-count containers.
Williams Farms Repack Tomato Recall
On May 2, 2025, Williams Farms Repack LLC recalled fresh tomatoes that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The tomatoes were sold under the labels “Williams Farms Repack” and “H&C Farms.”
The products were distributed between 4/23/2025 to 4/28/2025. These products were packaged and sold to wholesalers and distributors located in the states of: Georgia, North Carolina & South Carolina.
The recall involves both individual and bulk-sizes of tomatoes, including sizes ranging from 3-count trays to 25-pound boxes. These products are marked with Lot Code R4467 or Lot Code R4470.
What is the Risk?
Salmonella infection is a bacterial disease that causes food poisoning. The most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Healthy adults typically recover in 4 to 7 days, but the infection can persist for several weeks.
In some cases, Salmonella spreads from the intestines to the bloodstream or other parts of the body, causing severe complications which may be life-threatening. These complications may include arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
