First & Last Tomato Sauce Recalled for Botulism Risk
In November 2025, health officials announced a recall for three varieties of First & Last Tomato Sauce due to a risk of Botulism, which is one of the most dangerous types of food poisoning.
What is the Problem?
No illnesses were reported, but the tomato sauce has the “potential for Clostridium botulinum hazard as the product is manufactured without an approved schedule,” according to the FDA.
What Tomato Sauce Was Recalled?
The recall was announced by First and Last Bakery, LLC, of Hartford, Connecticut, for three types of tomato sauce:
- First and Last Original Marinara Sauce (Tomato & Basil)
- First and Last Original Traditional Pasta Sauce (Meat Flavored)
- First and Last Original Puttanesca Sauce (Mildly Hot & Spicy)
All three of these products were packaged in 26-fluid-ounce jars with Use-By Dates of 09/26.
Where Were They Sold?
The recalled First & Last Tomato Sauce products were distributed in Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and potentially other retailers between September 22, 2025 and October 28, 2025.
What Happened?
The tomato sauces were manufactured “without an approved scheduled process or otherwise evaluated to determine if the process is adequate,” according to the recall.
The FDA requires that canned foods like tomato sauce have to be processed according to an approved schedule. This helps prevent the growth of Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that can survive in under-processed canned foods and produce the botulism toxin.
What is Botulism?
Botulism is one of the most dangerous types of food poisoning. If a food product is contaminated, even a tiny sip of the food can cause serious health problems, paralysis, or even death.
Signs & Symptoms of Botulism
The symptoms of Botulism may include weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, or paralysis that progresses down the body. Left untreated, botulism can paralyze the breathing muscles and cause respiratory paralysis, suffocation, and death.
