TOMY Recalls 83,000 Highchairs for Fall & Injury Hazard

In August 2023, TOMY International recalled about 83,000 Boon Flair and Flair Elite Highchairs because the seat can break off the base, causing children to fall and suffer serious injuries or even death.

What is the Problem?

The bolts that are supposed to secure the seat to the pedestal base of the highchair can loosen and allow the seat to detach, which poses a fall hazard for children.

How Many Children Were Injured?

TOMY said it received 34 reports of the chair separating from the base, including 24 children who fell. Eleven children suffered injuries, such as bruising or scratches, according to the recall notice.

No deaths were reported, but the problem poses a risk of serious injuries from falls, head injuries, broken bones, and cuts needing stitches or hospitalization.

Was My TOMY Highchair Recalled?

The recall involves all TOMY Boon Flair highchairs that were manufactured before September 2016, and all TOMY Boon Flair Elite highchairs.

They were sold up through February 2021 at stores like Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Toys ‘R’ Us, other stores nationwide, and online at amazon.com and other websites.

The recall involves the following highchairs:

  • TOMY Boon Flair Highchair: The Flair highchairs have a gray plastic pedestal base and were sold in 10 color combinations. They were sold from January 2008 through February 2021 for between $230 and $250.
  • TOMY Boon Flair Elite Highchair: Model No. B751 with a white/orange color combination. The Flair Elite highchair has a white and orange molded plastic seat with a white tray and metal pedestal base. They were sold from 2008 to 2009 for about $380.

What Should I Do?

TOMY is asking caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled highchairs and contact the company to order a repair kit. Consumers will receive a set of bolts and split and flat washers to repair the recalled highchair. For more information, visit https://recall.tomy.com/.
