Trader Joe’s Cajun Chicken Alfredo Linked to Listeria Outbreak

In September 2025, health officials linked a deadly Listeria outbreak to prepared pasta meals, including Trader Joe’s Cajun-Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo and products sold at other stores.

FDA Outbreak Update

Trader Joe’s Cajun Chicken Alfredo and other products linked to this outbreak contain pre-cooked pasta ingredients that were supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods, Inc., according to the FDA Outbreak Update on October 2, 2025. The pasta meals were also manufactured by FreshRealm.

How Many People Got Sick?

Prepared pasta meals have been linked to 20 cases of Listeria in 15 states, including 19 hospitalizations and 4 deaths. The deaths were reported in Illinois, Michigan, Texas, and Utah. One pregnant woman who was infected resulted in a fetal loss (miscarriage).

People got sick between August 2024 through September 2025, but there may be more illnesses in other states. According to the CDC:

“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and this outbreak may not have been limited to the states with known illnesses.”

Recalls Expand After More Products Linked to Listeria Outbreak

In June 2025, Walmart and Kroger recalled several prepared pasta meals that tested positive for the same strain of Listeria that sickened at least 20 people in 15 states, including 4 who died.

In September 2025, the recalls expanded to include more prepared pasta meals, including Trader Joe’s Cajun Chicken Alfredo meals, after the pasta ingredient used in Walmart’s Marketside Linguine with Beef Meatball Meals tested positive for the same strain of Listeria that was previously linked to illnesses and deaths, according to the FDA.

What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause a serious and sometimes deadly infection called listeriosis. In mild cases, symptoms may involve a gastrointestinal illness with diarrhea and nausea.

In severe cases, Listeria spreads beyond the digestive system to other parts of the body. This may result in a life-threatening or deadly invasive infection that spreads to the nervous system, brain, spinal cord, or bloodstream.

Pregnant women may suffer only a mild flu-like illness, but the infection has a high risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or severe newborn infection.

Symptoms & Warning Signs

The symptoms of a Listeria infection can begin on the same day a person eats contaminated food, but it sometimes takes up to 10 weeks for symptoms to appear. The general symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions
  • Meningitis
  • Sepsis
  • Pregnancy complications
