Trek Bike Pedal Recall

In May 2021, Trek recalled about 316,500 Bontrager Satellite City Bicycle Pedals because the pedals can fall off the bicycle’s crank arm due to improper assembly by the retailer, which may result in serious injuries to a rider.

What is the Problem?

The pedals have a shallow 6-mm hex socket inside the spindle, which can cause a wrench to pop off easily. This makes it hard to tighten the pedals onto the bicycle. If the pedals are installed incorrectly by the retailer during assembly, they can fall off the crank arm of the bicycle.

How Many People Were Injured?

Trek said it has received 132 reports of the recalled pedals loosening, locking up or falling off, including 7 riders falling and experiencing injuries, including scrapes, bruises and road rash.

Where Were The Pedals Sold?

The recalled bike pedals were installed as original equipment on the following Trek bicycles:

  • Trek Allant+
  • Trek Dual Sport+
  • Trek FX 2
  • Trek FX 3
  • Trek Verve 2
  • Trek Verve 3
  • Trek Verve+

These bicycles were sold at Trek Bicycle stores, other bike stores nationwide, and trekbikes.com from January 2018 through April 2021 for between $600 and $6,000. The pedals were also sold separately for about $30.

The pedals can be identified by “ZTR02” stamped on the pedal. They also have orange reflectors on the outside edges.

Trek is asking consumers to immediately stop using bicycles equipped with the recalled pedals and contact their local authorized Trek retailer for instructions on receiving free installation of replacement pedals.
