June 9, 2015 — After an outbreak of Salmonella linked to sushi sickened 53 people, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has announced a recall for raw yellowfin tuna sold for sushi.
On May 27, Osamu Corporation of Gardena, California recalled (PDF) two lots of ground frozen yellowfin tuna imported from Indonesia.
The company also issued a distribution list (PDF) with over 100 sushi restaurants where the products were sold. Most of the restaurants are located near Los Angeles or in Southern California.
The products tested positive for two strains of Salmonella during tests by health officials in Arizona. According to the CDC:
“As a result of the ongoing investigation, the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department working with the Arizona State Public Health Laboratory identified Salmonella Newport in one sample and Salmonella Weltevreden in another sample of frozen raw ground tuna products.”
At total of 53 people in nine states have been sickened in the outbreak, including ten who were hospitalized, according to the CDC. Most of them reported eating sushi containing raw tuna in the week before falling ill.
The victims range in age from infants under one year old to adults over 83 years old. The CDC recommends that people at high-risk of food poisoning should never eat raw fish or shellfish, including:
- Children under 5 years old
- Adults over 65 years old
- Pregnant women
- People with weakened immune systems
