Osamu Corp. Tuna Recalled After Sushi Salmonella Outbreak

Osamu Corp. Tuna Recalled After Sushi Salmonella Outbreak

July 22, 2015 — Osamu Corporation has issued yet another recall for Salmonella-tainted yellowfin tuna used in sushi after health officials in Minnesota reported two illnesses.

The Frozen Tuna Yellow Fin Chunk Meat (Lot #68568) was shipped from May 20-26, 2015.

The Minnesota Department of Health says Osamu sourced the tuna from one processing plant in Indonesia, sold the tuna to California-based AFC Corporation, where it was distributed to AFC sushi franchises nationwide, including many grocery stores and sushi counters.

Samples of yellowfin tuna sold by Osamu in May 2015 tested positive for Salmonella during random sampling by health officials in Minnesota.

On May 27, Osamu Corp. also recalled yellowfin tuna sold at more than 100 sushi restaurants in California and Arizona (click here to read more). At least 60 people in 11 states were diagnosed with the outbreak strain of Salmonella. About half of the illnesses occurred near Los Angeles. Eleven people were hospitalized.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness for up to a week in healthy adults, with symptoms like fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Most people recover from food poisoning without needing medical treatment, but in some cases the infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal system and becomes life-threatening. According to the FDA:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
