What is the problem?

In October 2018, a company that supplies corn for Walmart and 7-Eleven ready-to-eat salads announced a recall after the corn tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria during routine testing by the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).

7-11 Salad Recall

October 16, 2018 — Prime Deli Corporation, of Lewisville, Texas, announced a voluntary recall for 7-Eleven™ Southwest Style Salad with Bacon because the corn ingredient in the salads may be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria.

The recalled products include:

  • 11.2-oz. clear plastic clamshell packages containing “7-ELEVEN™ BISTRO SOUTHWEST STYLE SALAD WITH BACON” and best by date of “Tuesday 1016”.
  • 9.6-oz. clear plastic clamshell packages containing “7-ELEVEN™ BISTRO SOUTHWEST STYLE SALAD WITH BACON” and best by date of “Tuesday 1016”.

The salads were produced on October 13, 2018. They are marked with the Establishment Number “EST. 13553” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Walmart Marketside Fiesta Salad Recall

On October 17, 2018, Walmart and GHSE, LLC of Florida voluntarily recalledapproximately 738 pounds of ready-to-eat salads with steak because the corn ingredient may be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria.

The salads were shipped to Walmart and other retail locations in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

The recall includes the following product:

  • 15.25-oz. clear plastic clamshell packages containing “Marketside™ FIESTA SALAD WITH STEAK” and use by date from 10/17/2018 through 10/20/2018.

The salads were produced from Oct. 11, 2018 through Oct. 14, 2018. They have establishment number “EST. 45781” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Salmonella Food Poisoning

Salmonella isa bacteria can cause severe food poisoning. The symptoms of infection may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12-72 hours after eating the contaminated product. Most people recover within 4-7 days without needing medical treatment.

Listeria Food Poisoning

Listeria is a bacteria can cause severe food poisoning. The symptoms of infection may not appear for up to 70 days The symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. Pregnant women may suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or infection of the newborn.
