August 26, 2024 — Walmart stores in dozens of states recalled apple juice that tested positive for high levels of inorganic arsenic, a toxic heavy metal.
The Class II recall was issued for Walmart’s store-brand Great Value® Apple Juice (100% Juice), sold in 8-oz plastic bottles in a 6-pack with UPC 0-78742-29655-5.
The products have “Best If Used By” date of December 28, 2024, or “DEC2824.” The recall involves about 9,500 cases of apple juice.
The apple juice contains 13.2 parts per billion (ppb) inorganic arsenic, which is above the 10 ppb action level set in industry guidance, according to the warning.
The apple juice was sold in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington D.C., Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia, according to the FDA.
Arsenic is a naturally-occurring heavy metal that is toxic to people, but it is more dangerous for children due to their smaller size and growing bodies. Apple orchards may be contaminated with arsenic due to past use of arsenic-based pesticides on the land, resulting in contaminated fruits.
