Walmart Broccoli Recalled for Food Poisoning Risk
In December 2024, a recall was announced for Walmart Marketside® Broccoli Florets due to a risk of food poisoning with Listeria bacteria.
Texas Health Officials Find Listeria in Walmart Broccoli
The recall was announced after health officials in Texas collected a bag of broccoli from a Walmart store in Texas and it tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious infections.
The risk of Listeria contamination was “discovered during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services from a Texas store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result,” the recall warned.
Were Any Illnesses Reported?
No illnesses were reported when the recall was announced in December 2024, but frozen broccoli that is contaminated with Listeria could still potentially cause life-threatening illnesses.
What is the Health Risk?
The recalled broccoli is past shelf-life and should not be in stores, but consumers may have put it in their freezers to use later. If you have this product in your home, do not eat it — throw it away. Listeria is a bacteria that can survive on frozen food and make people sick.
Listeria can be killed by cooking food thoroughly to an internal temperature of at least 165°F (74°C), but there is a risk of cross-contamination, which is why the recalled broccoli should be discarded.
Listeria Food Poisoning Information
People who eat the recalled bags of Marketside Broccoli from Walmart could be infected with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, which can be life-threatening or deadly for people who are elderly, those with vulnerable immune systems, pregnant women and infants.
