Walmart Celery Sticks Recalled for Listeria Risk

In April 2025, celery sticks that were sold at Walmart stores in 29 states were recalled due to a risk of food poisoning illnesses with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled celery stick product is past its shelf-life and is no longer in stores, but Walmart is issuing a warning because some customers may have eaten this product, or put it in their freezer for later use.

What Happened?

On April 10, 2025, Duda Farm Fresh Foods Inc. announced a recall for pre-washed ready-to-eat celery sticks that were sold in 4-count bags.

No illnesses were reported. The recall was announced after a random sample of celery sticks from a store in Georgia tested positive for Listeria, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

According to the recall:

“The potential for contamination was discovered during random sampling by the Georgia Department of Agriculture from a Georgia store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result.”

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled celery sticks were distributed to certain Walmart stores in Alabama, California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

How To Identify Recalled Celery Sticks

What is the Risk?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning. Young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of serious complications or death.

According to the FDA: “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
