UPDATE: Wolfgang Puck Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

In July 2022, a woman from California who was burned by her Wolfgang Puck Pressure Cooker filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer. The plaintiff, Angela T. alleges that she was seriously burned when she was able to easily open the lid on her Wolfgang Puck 8-Quart Rapid Pressure Cooker (Model Number BPCRM800) while there was still a dangerous amount of pressure inside the unit, resulting in an explosion of scalding-hot food, liquid and steam. What is the Wolfgang Puck Pressure Cooker?

Wolfgang Puck Rapid Electric Pressure Cookers are kitchen appliances for home chefs. The product consists of a pot with a locking lid and an electric heater. As the temperature inside the pot rises, liquids boil and produce steam, which causes pressure to rise. This process is useful for cooking food faster and with less energy.

Dangers of Pressure Cookers

Pressure cookers are popular and useful tools, but they also pose serious safety hazards. One of the most common problems is that the vent gets clogged and the pressure increases so much that the lid pops off. This can explode hot steam and food all over the kitchen and anyone standing nearby. Pressure cookers can also explode if the lid does not lock on, or if it is opened before it is fully de-pressurized.

Pressure Cooker Explosions

Pressure cookers can cause “steam explosions.” When boiling-hot water in a pressure cooker is suddenly released, it expands rapidly — spraying hot liquids and food in every direction. The most serious risk is that sticky food will land on a person and cause severe burns.

Wolfgang Puck Pressure Cooker Class Action Lawsuit

The first class action lawsuit for the Wolfgang Automatic Rapid Pressure Cooker was filed by Tabitha W., a woman from Texas who suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns when her pressure cooker exploded boiling-hot gumbo onto her body at the end of its cooking cycle. She blames the manufacturer for selling a defective product.

Pressure Cooker Injuries

In recent years, dozens of people have been injured or burned by defective pressure cookers. Many of these complaints are related to the Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL and Crofton Chef’s Collection Pressure Cooker. The most serious pressure cooker injuries include:

  • Severe burns
  • Scalds
  • Permanent scarring
  • Disfigurement
  • Hospitalization
  • Skin graft surgery
  • Property damage
