Jury Awards $11 Million in 1st Wright Conserve Trial
In November 2015, the first “bellwether” trial involving the Wright Conserve hip implant has ended in an $11 million jury verdict in favor of a woman who was injured when it loosened prematurely. The company is currently facing 550 lawsuits in federal court in Georgia and hundreds more in state court in California.
Wright Conserve Hip Replacement Lawsuits
Thousands of lawsuits have been filed by people who were injured by metal-on-metal hip implants, and billions of dollars in settlements have been offered to plaintiffs. Most of these lawsuits are centralized in federal litigation.
In 2014, lawsuits involving the Wright Conserve hip replacement were centralized in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, overseen by Judge William S. Duffey, Jr. The members of the litigation allege that the metal-on-metal design is defective.
Although many lawsuits have been filed, these are not part of a Wright Conserve class action. Instead, they are individual lawsuits filed in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) by people who hired an attorney.

What is the Wright Conserve?
The Wright Conserve is a brand of hip replacements that were first approved in the United States in 2003. The FDA approved the Conserve with a 510(k) application, which allows new devices on the market without requiring rigorous safety tests. Wright claimed the Conserve was “substantially equivalent” to other metal-on-metal hip implants. Unfortunately, many of these all-metal hips have been recalled or linked to unacceptably high failure-rates.
Problems with the Wright Conserve Hip Replacement
The Wright Conserve and other metal-on-metal hip replacements were originally marketed as longer-lasting than plastic or ceramic implants. Instead, studies have shown that toxic particles of metal can be released into a patient’s body. These particles form an irritating residue around the hip and leech into the bloodstream. Patients who develop problems with the Wright Conserve may need revision surgery to remove and replace the implant.
Defective Wright Hip Replacement Complications
- Hip pain
- Inflammation, swelling
- Problems standing or walking
- Dislocation of the hip joint
- Metal poisoning (metallosis)
- Systemic reactions (organ damage)
- Bone loss in the hip
- Soft-tissue growths (pseudo-tumors)
- Premature failure
- Revision surgery
