June 12, 2014 — Organic sprouted chia seed powder from Green Smoothie Girl has been recalled over concern that it may be contaminated with Salmonella.
Federal health officials are currently investigating an outbreak of food poisoning linked to chia seeds that has sickened at least 55 people. No illnesses have been linked to Green Smoothie Girl products.
According to CEO Robyn Openshaw:
“To date, there have been no reports of sickness traced back to our products, but we have chosen to exert the utmost level of caution in this situation to protect the health and well-being of our customers. We are, therefore, voluntarily recalling products that contain organic sprouted chia powder.”
Products recalled by Green Smoothie Girl include:
- Green Smoothie Girl Sprouted Ground TriOmega Superfood, 16 oz, UPC 853811005036 with lot number AC030141, Exp. 1/2016 (Silver Ziplock Pouch)
- Green Smoothie Girl Sprouted Ground TriOmega Superfood, 16 oz, no UPC, with lot number BIO13TOP300, Exp. 10/2015 (Gold Ziplock Pouch)
In the last month, several other companies have recalled chia seed powder over concern about Salmonella. In May, Navitas Naturals recalled organic chia powder and smoothie mixes. In June, Health Matters America recalled Organic Traditions and other chia powder products.
Health officials in Canada are investigating 34 illnesses possibly linked to the outbreak. An additional 21 cases are under investigation in the United States.
