August 9, 2012 — Approximately 1.3 million GE dishwashers are being recalled due to a fire hazard. The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall from GE. They are recommending that consumers should stop using the products immediately.
The following GE dishwashers are being recalled:
- GE Adora
- GE Eterna
- GE Profile
- Hotpoint Dishwashers
The affected products were sold between March 2006 through August 2009. Each dishwasher was priced between $350 and $850. The products came in multiple colors, including white, stainless steel, bisque, and “CleanSteel.”
Model and serial numbers can be found inside the dishwasher on a metallic plate. The plate is located on the left wall of the tub inside the dishwasher, and it is visible when the door is opened.
The company has received reports of 15 dishwasher fires. Three of the fires have caused extensive property damage. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
They are recommending that people who own a recalled dishwasher should immediately stop using it, disconnect the electrical supply by shutting off the circuit breaker, and tell everyone who uses the dishwasher that it cannot be used due to risk of fire.
Customers can contact GE for a free in-home repair kit. Customers who wish to replace their dishwasher should contact GE about a rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher. Customers should not return the dishwasher to the store where it was purchased; the store will not accept the dishwasher or compensate the customer.
The CPSC also reminded consumers that it is illegal to sell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
