October 27, 2021 — The first lawsuits have been filed by people who were infected with Salmonella Oranienburg after eating recalled onions from Mexico.
One of the lawsuits was filed in Idaho on behalf of Terry M., a man who was hospitalized with a severe Salmonella infection after eating a hot dog with contaminated onions. He was interviewed by local health officials who confirmed that he was part of the outbreak.
Another lawsuit was filed in Texas on behalf of a child who developed organ failure, sepsis, pneumonia and other life-threatening complications after eating contaminated onions at Torchy’s Tacos in San Antonio.
Both lawsuits accuse ProSource Produce LLC of selling contaminated onions that caused a 37-state outbreak of Salmonella, with at least 652 people sickened.
The onions were imported from Mexico between July 1 and August 31, before they were voluntarily recalled on October 20, 2021. The recall involves whole fresh red, white and yellow onions that were sold to grocery stores, restaurants, food service locations and retailers.
