UPDATE: Lawsuits Filed After Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 800+ People

In October 2021, the first two lawsuits were filed on behalf of people who were infected with Salmonella Oranienburg after eating onions. The plaintiffs include a person from Idaho and a child in Texas who developed life-threatening complications. In November, another lawsuit was filed by a couple from Texas who were hospitalized. RECALL: Alsum Farms, Potandon, Green Giant, HelloFresh, EveryPlate

On November 12, Alsum Farms & Produce recalled whole red, yellow and white onions from Chihuahua, Mexico, that were sold to retailers in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania between July 13 and August 18, 2021. The onions were sold in 2-pound to 50-pound bags that were labeled “Produce of Mexico.”

On October 23, HelloFresh and EveryPlate recalled meal kits with onions that were received from July 7, 2021 through September 8, 2021. The products contain onions that were recalled due to an outbreak of Salmonella.

Potandon Produce LLC recalled Green Giant Fresh whole yellow onions in 2 lb. bags, 3 lb. bags, and 5 lb. bags; whole white onions in 2 lb. bags; and whole red onions in 2 lb. bags delivered directly to three UNFI retail distribution centers between July 9 and Aug 6, 2021.

2021 Onion Salmonella Outbreak – Nearly 900 People Sick

In October 2021, onions were linked to an outbreak of Salmonella that sickened at least 892 people in 38 states and Puerto Rico, including 183 people who were hospitalized. The outbreak was linked to fresh whole red, white, and yellow onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico and distributed by ProSource Inc and Keeler Family Farms to grocery stores and restaurants.

Keeler Family Farms Recalls Onions From Mexico

On October 22, 2022, Keeler Family Farms (labeled as MVP) recalled whole raw onions (red, white, and yellow) shipped from the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, from July 1, 2021 through August 25, 2021. The onions were distributed in 25 lb. and 50 lb. mesh sacks. The onions are labeled with MVP (product of MX), but were processed at Keeler Family Farms.

ProSource Recalls Onions from Mexico

In October 2021, ProSource Produce LLC recalled whole raw onions that were shipped from Chihuahua, Mexico between July 1, 2021, and August 31, 2021, including onions that were sold by the following distributors and/or brand-names:

  • Big Bull
  • Peak Fresh Produce
  • Sierra Madre
  • Markon First Crop.
  • Markon Essentials
  • Rio Blue
  • ProSource
  • Rio Valley
  • Sysco Imperial

The onions were distributed to wholesalers, broadline foodservice customers, and retail stores in 50 lb., 25 lb., 10 lb., 5 lb., 3 lb., and 2 lb. mesh sacks; and 50 lb., 40 lb., 25 lb., 10 lb., and 5 lb. cartons.

ProSource said the onions were last imported on August 27, but they can last up to 3 months in storage, so consumers and restaurants may still have them. The recalled onions distributed may be marked with a sticker labeled with ProSource and the country of origin (Mexico), but to be safe, throw out all unmarked onions if you can’t tell where they are from. 2020 Onion Salmonella Outbreak – Over 1,000 People Sick

In 2020, over 1,000 people were infected with Salmonella Newport after eating onions from Thomson International. In response, recalls were issued by Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Ralph’s, Food 4 Less, H-E-B, Giant Eagle, Publix, Trader Joe’s, HelloFresh, and more.

As of August 31, 2020, the recalled onions were linked to a total of 1,012 illnesses with Salmonella Newport in the U.S., with 47 states affected, and 136 people hospitalized.

The hardest-hit states were California (122 illnesses), Washington (117 illnesses), Utah (110 illnesses), Oregon (101 illnesses), Montana (63 illnesses), Illinois (54 illnesses), and Michigan (47 illnesses).

HelloFresh Issues Urgent Onion Recall

On August 19, 2020, HelloFresh recalled its onions due to the potential presence of Salmonella. HelloFresh is asking consumers to throw out all onions received from May 8 through July 31, 2020.

1st Onion Salmonella Lawsuit Filed By Woman Hospitalized for 12 Days

The first lawsuit as been filed by Betty A., woman from California who bought contaminated onions from Stater Bros Markets. She was hospitalized for 12 days due to a severe Salmonella infection and kidney failure.

Kroger Recalls Yellow Onions at Ralph’s, Food 4 Less

Spokane Produce Recalls Salsa With Onions

Spokane Produce Inc. recalled salsas containing onions due to a potential risk of Salmonella. The recall involves certain Saddlin’ Up Salsa (Hot, Medium, or Mild) and Salsa Verde products that were distributed in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

Ralph’s and Trader Joe’s Recall Onions for Salmonella Risk

On August 10, 2020, Progressive Produce announced a recall for Trader Joe’s red onions sold only in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah stores, and Ralph’s yellow onions sold only in California stores. The onions were sold loose in bulk bins. The red onions have a PLU sticker with the brand name Pacific Gold®.

Costco Recalls Onions for Salmonella Risk

Publix & Giant Eagle Recall Onion Products

  • Publix Super Markets (red onions, packaged by Del Monte Fresh Produce, N.A., Inc. and sold in bulk merchandise displays in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia)
  • Giant Eagle (red, yellow and white onions sold in produce departments in Pennsylania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Maryland)

Food Lion Recalls Red, White & Yellow Onions

On August 1, Food Lion recalled jumbo red onions sold between May 24 – July 31, and jumbo white onions, jumbo yellow onions and 3-pound bags of yellow onions sold between May 24 – Aug. 1. The recalled onions were sold at select Food Lion stores in the produce section.

The recall also involves sliced red onions and stir fry vegetables prepared in-store and sold in the in-store cut fruit and vegetables department at the same select Food Lion stores between May 24 – July 31.

Walmart, Kroger, H-E-B Recall Food With Onions

On August 5, 2020, Taylor Farms of Dallas, Texas, announced recalls for several pre-made salads, deli items, sandwiches, and other foods because they contain onions that may be contaminated by Salmonella.

The recalled products at Kroger include:

  • Taylor Farms Macaroni Salad
  • Taylor Farms Rotini Pasta Salad
  • Taylor Farms Chicken Salad Croissant Sandwiches
  • Taylor Farms Cheddar Cheese & Chicken Salad Snack Tray
  • Fresh Kitchen Bulk Chicken Salad (deli service counter)

The recalled products from Walmart include:

  • Marketside Diced Yellow Onion
  • Marketside Diced Mirepoix
  • Marketside Fajita Stir Fry
  • Taylor Farms Chicken Salad Croissant Sandwich
  • Sausage Breakfast Scramble Bowl
  • Chicken Salad Deli Snack
  • Marketside Southwest Style Salad With Chicken

The recalled product from H-E-B is the H.E.B. Shake Rattle Bowl Southwest Salad.

Thomson International Inc. Recalls All Onions After Salmonella Outbreak

On August 1, 2020, Thomson International Inc., of Bakersfield, California, recalled all colors of onions nationwide in the U.S. after they were linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections, with hundreds of people sick in the U.S. and Canada.

How Many People Are Sick?

As of August 18, 2020, the recalled onions were linked to a total of 869 Salmonella Newport illnesses in 47 states in the U.S., with 116 people hospitalized, since June 19, 2020, according to the CDC outbreak investigation.

In Canada, as of August 7, at least 339 people have been sickened with Salmonella after eating recalled onions that were imported from the U.S. by Thomson International and Sysco, according to Health Canada.

What Onions Were Recalled?

The recall involves red, yellow, white, and sweet yellow onions that were shipped after May 1, 2020. They were packaged in mesh bags, boxes, and cartons ranging in size from 2 pounds to 50 pounds.

They were sold to restaurants, grocery stores, wholesalers, food service operations for institutions like schools and nursing homes, or companies that re-package the onions as ingredients in other foods.
