Around 2 million car jack stands and emergency spare tire jacks have been recalled because they can suddenly collapse under a lifted vehicle and crush or kill anyone working underneath or near the car.

Car Jack Recalls from Harbor Freight, GM, Summit Racing, and Walmart

  • Emergency Tire Jacks for GM Vehicles — In June 2021, GM recalled 135,400 emergency spare tire jacks that were sold with Buick Encore GX (2020-2022 models) and Chevrolet Trailblazer (2021-2022 models) because they can collapse.
  • Can-Am Screw Jacks — In December 2020, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) recalled about 650 Can-Am® Off-Road screw jacks because they can collapse and cause lifted vehicle to fall on a consumer, resulting in severe injuries or death to anyone under the vehicle or nearby.
  • Summit Racing Jack Stands — In December 2020, about 1,200 3-ton and 6-ton jacks were recalled because they can collapse.
  • Walmart / Hyper Tough Jack Stands — In August 2020, about 14,000 Hyper Tough 2-Ton Jack Stands were recalled because they can collapse.
  • Replacement Pittsburgh Jack Stands — In July 2020, Harbor Freight issued a 3rd recall for Pittsburgh Jack Stands (3-ton, 6-ton and 12-ton) because a defective weld can cause them to collapse. These jacks were supposed to be “safe” alternatives to replace the defective jacks from a previous recall, but they were also defective.
  • Harbor Freight Jack Stands — In May 2020, Harbor Freight recalled 1.7 million Pittsburgh Automotive 3-Ton and 6-Ton Heavy-Duty Steel Jack Stands because they can collapse.
