BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Lawsuit
In May 2020, a lawsuit was filed against BabyBjorn Inc. by the mother of a girl who developed hip dysplasia after being carried in BabyBjorn Original Baby Carrier. Tragically, she had to suffer through numerous surgeries, body casts and braces, hospitalization, and other problems.
What is the Problem?
The lawsuit claims the BabyBjorn baby carrier is “dangerously defective” because it has a narrow bottom that does not support the hips. Instead, the baby’s legs hang straight down in an unsafe position, whether the baby is facing the parent or away. This puts excessive force on the hip joint and increases the risk of hip dysplasia.
BabyBjorn Lawsuit Claims Baby Developed Hip Dysplasia
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of “O.T.,” a baby girl who lives in California. Her mother started using the BabyBjorn in 2012, from the time O.T. was around 6 weeks old, on a daily basis, multiple times a day and for extended periods, until she was around 6 months old.
What Happened?
O.T. developed hip dysplasia after being carried in the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier. At 1 year of age, she had her first surgery and was put in a body cast for 3 months. Then, she had a pelvic osteotomy (surgical shaving of the left hip bone), and was hospitalized for 3 days.
She wore another cast for 6 weeks, then a body brace for another 6 weeks, and finally had a 3rd surgery to remove the plate and screws. As a result, she suffered delayed development of fine motor skills, and speech delays.
The BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California (Western Division) — O.T. vs. BabyBjorn Inc. — Case No. 2:20-cv-04517.
Are Baby Carriers Safe?
Baby carriers with a narrow, unstructured seat do not support the infant’s thighs. If you look at a baby in one of these carriers, their legs fall straight down. This locks their hips into an unhealthy position.
In comparison, babies in a well-designed carrier will look like they are comfortably straddling their caregiver in an “M-position” with their knees bent.
If a baby is carried in an unhealthy position for extended periods of time, they can develop hip dysplasia or dislocation. The risk is highest in the first 6 months of life when the edges of their hip sockets are made of soft cartilage.
Hip Injuries Linked to Baby Carriers
- Hip dysplasia
- Looseness of the hips (minor laxity)
- Hip dislocation
- Developmental Dislocation of the Hip (DDH)
- Avascular necrosis
- Arthritis of the hips
