Evenflo Snugli Baby Carrier Lawsuit

In May 2020, a lawsuit was filed against Evenflo by the parents of a baby who developed hip dysplasia after using the Evenflo Snugli Comfort Baby Carrier. The lawsuit claims the baby “suffered greatly, having to wear a stiff brace for a minimum of 8 hours a day for approximately one year.”

What is Hip Dysplasia?

The hip is a “ball and socket” joint. The socket is located on the pelvis and the ball is located at the top of the thigh bone. Hip dysplasia occurs when the socket does not completely cover the ball, which can cause hip dislocations.

In children, hip dysplasia can cause serious problems with learning to crawl and walk. For adults, the long-term risks include painful arthritis of the hips.

Who Filed the Lawsuit?

The lawsuit was filed by Monique C., a guardian who carried the baby “R.R.” in the Evenflo Snugli Comfort Baby Carrier from the time he was approximately 2 weeks old, on a daily basis, multiple times per day, and often for extended periods of time, until R.R. was approximately 8 months old.

What Happened?

Unfortunately, R.R. developed hip dysplasia and had to be put into a stiff body brace at 1 year of age. He was confined to that body cast for 8 to 12 hours a day for a year. The baby’s doctors continue to monitor his hip dysplasia, and warn that he may still need surgery in the future.

What is the Problem?

The Evenflo Snugli Comfort Baby Carrier is “dangerously defective,” according to the lawsuit. A child can be positioned in the baby carrier facing toward their caregiver or away — but in either direction, the baby’s legs hang straight down, in an unsafe position for hip development.

The lawsuit claims that “properly-designed baby carriers have a wider, more structured bottom, which gives more support for the infant’s hips.” Unfortunately, the Evenflo Snugli Comfort Baby Carrier “has a narrow bottom that does not provide sufficient support of the infant’s hips.”

Evenfo is accused of selling a defective baby carrier that “presents a dangerous risk of hip dysplasia, particularly with prolonged use.”

The Evenflo Baby Carrier Lawsuit (PDF) was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California — R.R. vs. Evenflo Company Inc.Case No. 3:20-cv-03392-LB.
