Baby Carriers Linked to Hip Dysplasia

Hip dysplasia has been linked to baby carriers that fail to support the baby’s hips and legs in the proper “M-position,” according to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.

These unsafe baby carriers are typically soft, with a narrow base and an unstructured seat. The baby’s legs hang straight down, with their hips locked in an unnaturally straight, stretched-out position.

If the baby carrier is used extensively (especially in the first 6 months of the baby’s life) the “ball” of the hip joint can permanently damage the edges of the socket, resulting in hip dysplasia and hip dislocations.

Chicco sells several baby carriers that are NOT on the list of “hip healthy products” according to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute:

  • Chicco UltraSoft Infant Carrier
  • Chicco UltraSoft Magic Infant Carrier
  • Chicco UltraSoft Magic Air Infant Carrier
  • Chicco UltraSoft LE Infant Carrier

What is Hip Dysplasia?

The hip is a “ball and socket” joint, with the socket located on the pelvis and the ball located on top of the femur (thigh bone). Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip socket is too shallow, which allows the ball to slip out of the socket and dislocate.

Was Your Baby Diagnosed With Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip?

Hip dysplasia is also called Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). Babies who are diagnosed with this condition often need extensive treatment during their first few years of life, including months of wearing rigid casts or braces 24/7, and sometimes hip surgery. If it is not treated, hip dysplasia can cause problems with crawling and walking, painful arthritis of the hip, and frequent hip dislocations.

Hip Problems Linked to Baby Carriers

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Looseness of the hips (minor laxity)
  • Hip dislocation
  • Developmental Dislocation of the Hip (DDH)
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Arthritis of the hips
