UPDATE: Sanctuary Quick Access Biometric Gun Safes Recalled
In June 2024, about 133,000 biometric gun safes were recalled by SA Consumer Products because they can open when anyone places their fingers on the scanner.
No injuries were reported, but there were 77 reports of the gun safes being opened by unauthorized users. The recall involves:
- Sports Afield Home Defense 4-Gun Biometric Safe: Sold at firearm and sporting goods stores nationwide and online for between $500 and $600 between July 2020 and November 2023. It is 55 inches high by 12 inches wide by 11 inches deep.
- Sanctuary Quick Access Biometric Home Safe: Sold at Costco and other stores nationwide, and online at Costco.com, for between $75 and $100 between July 2020 and November 2023. It is 10 inches high by 14 inches wide by 10 inches deep.
Biometric Gun Safes Recalled After Death of 12-Year-Old
Thousands of biometric gun safes have been recalled because anyone can open the lock. These recalls follow the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy who accessed a gun from a recalled biometric Fortress Safe.
Fortress Safe Lawsuit Filed by Parents of Boy Who Died
The parents of the 12-year-old boy who died filed a lawsuit against Fortress Safe. The boy “suffered a lethal gunshot wound to the head” in January 2022. He accessed the gun because he was able to open the safe in his home using his fingerprints, according to the lawsuit.
The gun safe was purchased by the boy’s father in March 2021 at a Scheel’s store in Nevada, according to the The New York Times.
What is the Problem?
The problem is that biometric gun safes are shipped to stores in a default factory setting called “demonstration mode.” This setting allows anyone’s fingerprint to open the safe until it is programmed to only open for the owner’s fingerprint. If the owner does not program the safe, or fails to program it successfully, the safe can open for anyone.
Widespread Safety Hazard With Biometric Gun Safes
This deadly hazard appears to be widespread among biometric gun safe manufacturers, according to safety officials. The problem has led to multiple recalls and warnings to gun owners.
