How Do I Check If My Generac Generator Was Recalled?

Generac has issued multiple recalls for generators in recent years for separate defects, so if you are not sure, please a href=”https://www.generac.com/about/recalls/GP-Carburetor” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>contact Generac to check if your generator is affected by a safety issue.

The recall issued in April 2026 involves generators with the following information:

  • Recalled by: Generac Power Systems, of Waukesha, Wisconsin
  • Products: Certain Generac portable generators, including GP3600, GP4000DF, GP6500 series, GP8000E, GP9200E, and GP9500ETF models (orange and black, steel-tube frame with two wheels)
  • Recall date: April 16, 2026
  • Units affected: About 149,400 (plus about 260 in Canada)
  • Hazard: When first filling the recalled generator with gasoline, fuel can leak from the carburetor, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire or burn hazard
  • Incidents reported: 114 reports of fuel leaks; no injuries confirmed at time of recall
  • Where sold: Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other home improvement and hardware stores nationwide and online, May 2025 through February 2026, $600–$1,300
  • Remedy: Free repair at an authorized dealer; consumers whose units have previously been fueled and used without leakage may continue use
  • Official source: CPSC recall notice

What Was Recalled and When?

On April 16, 2026, Generac Power Systems voluntarily recalled approximately 149,400 portable generators in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The recalled generators feature an orange and black cover and are housed in a steel-tube cradle frame with two wheels. The model and serial number are printed on a label attached to the unit.

Where Were They Sold?

The recall covers several widely used GP-series models, including the GP3600, GP4000DF, GP6500, GP6500E, GP6500COA, GP6500COB, GP8000E, GP9200E, and GP9500ETF. These generators were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other home improvement and hardware stores nationwide and online from May 2025 through February 2026 for between $600 and $1,300.

To check whether your specific unit is included, visit Generac’s recall page and enter your model and serial number.

What Is the Hazard?

When first filling the recalled generator with gasoline, fuel can leak from the carburetor, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire or burn hazard. According to the CPSC:

“When first filling the recalled generator with gasoline, fuel can leak from the carburetor, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire or burn hazard. Consumers with generators that have previously been filled with enough gasoline to move the gauge off “E,” or have been used without any gasoline leakage, can continue to be used.”

The defect is specific to the initial fueling of the generator. Gasoline escaping from the carburetor before the engine is ever started creates a fire and explosion risk at the exact moment users are least likely to anticipate it.

How Many Fuel Leaks Were Reported?

The CPSC received 114 reports of fuel leaks. No injuries had been confirmed at the time the recall was announced. However, flammable fuel leaking near an engine is a serious hazard, and the CPSC classified the defect as posing a risk of serious injury or death. If you were burned when fuel sprayed or pooled during your first fill, your experience is exactly what this recall was issued to address.

Does the Recall Apply If You Have Already Used Your Generator?

The CPSC note that consumers whose generators have already been filled with enough gasoline to move the fuel gauge off empty, and who have not experienced any fuel leakage, may continue to use the generator.

However, if your unit is on the recalled model list and has not yet been fueled, or if you observed any fuel leakage when fueling, the CPSC instructs you to stop using it immediately and contact an authorized dealer for a free repair.

If you are unsure whether your unit qualifies, Generac’s recall page allows you to check your model and serial number. The repair is performed free of charge at your dealer’s location.

Previous Generac Recalls

This is not the first time Generac has recalled its portable generators. In July 2021, Generac recalled more than 321,000 generators due to a risk of finger amputations and crushing injuries from an unlocked handle that could pinch fingers against the generator frame.

That recall was later expanded and re-announced in November 2022 after a total of 37 injuries were reported, including 24 finger amputations and 5 crushing injuries.

In September 2023, Generac recalled about 64,000 additional generators after 27 reports of fuel shooting out of the tank and onto people when the cap was opened, resulting in 3 severe burn injuries. The 2026 recall involves a different fuel system defect, different models, and a different mechanism of injury, and should be treated as a separate matter.

Can I File a Lawsuit If I Was Burned?

If you suffered burn injuries or property damage when a recalled Generac generator leaked fuel during fueling, you may have legal options. Generac Power Systems is a large, publicly traded manufacturer headquartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin. When a company recalls a product and acknowledges a defect, that recall can be significant evidence in a product liability claim.
