Colorado Woman Files Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

Colorado Woman Files Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

March 3, 2022 — A woman from Colorado has filed a lawsuit against Sunbeam Products after she was burned by a Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker that exploded when she opened the lid.

The plaintiff, Karen O., is a woman from Denver, Colorado, who was burned by her pressure cooker on February 14, 2020.

According to the lawsuit, she was able to open the lid on her Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker when it was still under pressure, “allowing its scalding-hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker” and onto her body.

She claims that she was burned by the Crock-Pot Express Crock Multicooker (Model Number SCCPPC 600-V1) — the same model that was recalled in November 2020 due to a risk of severe burn injuries.

The recall was announced after “119 reports of lid detachment, resulting in 99 burn injuries ranging in severity from first-degree to third- degree burns,” according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Sunbeam Products is accused of falsely advertising the safety features of the Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker.

Sunbeam claims that it has “safety sensors” that keep the lid from being opened when the unit is under pressure. Sunbeam also claims that “pressure will not build if the lid is not shut correctly and has not sealed.”

Instead, there have been more than 100 reports of the safety features failing. Sunbeam is now facing a growing number of lawsuits involving people who were severely burned when their pressure cooker exploded.

The Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed on February 2, 2022 against Sunbeam Products Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida — Case 0:22-cv-60259-JEM.
