August 24, 2022 — A woman from New Zealand was badly burned after her Sunbeam Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker exploded and covered her in boiling liquid.
The woman, Robyn Luketina Wineera, said she was boiling food in her Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cooker when she touched the lid and the cooker made the “sound of a bomb going off.”
The lid blew off the pot and hit her on the side of her head. She immediately suffered burns on her face and arm, and was nearly blinded.
Her face healed, but the burns on her arm became needed skin graft surgery and became infected.
Five weeks after the accident, she still does not have full use of her arm. Her husband had to take time off work because she was unable to care for her 2-year-old child alone.
Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cookers are still being sold in New Zealand because they were not included in a major recall in 2020.
Nearly 1 million Crock-Pot® 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers were recalled in the U.S. and Canada because it can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked. This can cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use.
As of November 2020, the manufacturer, Sunbeam Products, said it had received 119 reports of lid detachment, resulting in 99 burn injuries ranging in severity from 1st-degree to 3rd-degree burns. Since then, a growing number of lawsuits have been filed by the victims.
