April 10, 2017 — Marketside Organic Spring Mix Salad was recalled from Walmart stores in 8 states after two people in Florida reportedly found a bat after eating some of the salad.
The FDA announced a recall on April 8 for all salads manufactured in the same production run.
The recall includes Organic Marketside Spring Mix in a 5-oz clear container, Production Code #G089B19, Best-By date of April 14, 2017 on top of container, UPC Code 6 8113132897 5 on bottom of container.
The salads were sold in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The recall does not include any other Marketside Salads or Fresh Express salads.
The bat was too rotten for health officials to determine if it had rabies, so both people who ate the salad are starting treatment as if they had been exposed, according to an update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They say the risk of rabies is low, but not zero.
The agency is asking anyone who found “animal material” in the recalled salad to report it to their local health department. Otherwise, people who ate the recalled salad “are not at risk and do not need to contact their health department,” the CDC recommends.
Consumers who bought the salad should throw it out and not consume it. Fresh Express is offering a full refund at the Walmart store where the salad was purchased.
