What is the problem?
In June 2020, Fresh Express recalled dozens of bagged salads with iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and carrots, because the salads may be contaminated with Cyclospora parasites.
More than 200 infections with Cyclospora were reported, primarily in the Midwest, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
ShopRite Salad Recalled for Cyclospora Risk
ShopRite stores recalled a variety of Fresh Express® salads, as well as the following ShopRite Wholesome Pantry® salads:
- ShopRite Wholesome Pantry Organic Chopped Sesame Asian Salad Kit — 10.9 oz — UPC Code 041190066308 — Production Code Z178 or Lower — Use-By or Before Date: Jul-12 — Sold in: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania
- Wholesome Pantry Organic Sesame Asian Salad Kit — 13 oz — UPC Code 041190066292 — Production Code: Z178 or Lower — Use-By or Before Date: Jul-11 — Sold in: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania
The recalled salads display the product code Z178, or a lower number. The “Best by” date on the products run through July 14, 2020.
What is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause diarrhea and other symptoms in people who eat contaminated food or water. The diarrhea is frequent and watery, and it can persist for months until the infection is properly diagnosed and treated.
Signs & Symptoms of Cyclospora Food Poisoning
- Watery diarrhea (most common)
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Cramping
- Bloating
- Increased gas
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Vomiting
- Low-grade fever
