What is the problem?
In June 2020, Fresh Express recalled certain Giant Eagle® salads because they may be contaminated with Cyclospora parasites. The salads contain iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and cattors.
More than 200 people were infected and suffered food poisoning due to Cyclospora, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fresh Express Salad Recall
On June 27, 2020, Fresh Express recalled bagged salads displaying the product code Z178, or a lower number. The “Best by” date on the products run through July 14, 2020.
Where Were Recalled Salads Sold?
The recalled salads marked with the product code Z178 or lower were sold in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
What is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora parasites can infect people who eat contaminated food or water. The most common symptom is diarrhea, with watery bowel movements that can persist for months without treatment. In severe cases, people must be hospitalized due to severe weight-loss, fatigue, dehydration, and other complications.
Symptoms of Cyclospora Infection
- Watery diarrhea (most common)
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Cramping
- Bloating
- Increased gas
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Vomiting
- Low-grade fever
