CaTeam Canvas Baby Hammock Swing Recall
In June 2023, CaTeam recalled about 700 Canvas Baby Hammock Swings because infants can suffocate to death.
What is the Problem?
The recalled hammock swings are a type of banned baby product called an inclined sleeper. These products are not allowed to be advertised for infant sleep due to the risk of suffocation or death.
Banned Inclined Sleepers Pose Deadly Suffocation Hazard
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the hammock swings are a “banned hazardous product” under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act.
This law makes it illegal to advertise products for infant sleep if the sleeping surface has an angle greater than 10º due to the risk of suffocation:
“Infant fatalities have occurred in inclined sleepers after the infants rolled from their back to their stomach or side while unrestrained, or under other circumstances.”
What is the Risk?
Babies can suffocate if they roll from their back onto their stomach or side, and get their face trapped against the fabric. Babies can also die under other circumstances. It only takes a few minutes for an infant to suffer permanent brain damage or death due to a lack of oxygen.
For example, positional asphyxia may occur when the slouched-forward position causes the infant’s head to touch their chest, compressing their airway so they can’t breathe.
What Hammock Swings Were Recalled?
The recall involves infant hammock swings made of wood and cloth with adjustable height settings. The swings were sold in many colors. The name “CaTeam” is printed on a label stitched on the swings.
They were sold online at the firm website http://cateam.store and Amazon.com from November 2022 through January 2023 for between $70 and $100.
