HONEY JOY Infant Swings Recalled for Deadly Suffocation Risk
In September 2023, HONEY JOY announced a recall for about 170 infant swings that pose a deadly risk of suffocation.
What is the problem?
HONEY JOY Infant Swings were advertised for sleep, but they are not safe for sleep because they are inclined sleepers with an angle greater than 10º. Inclined sleep products have been banned due to the risk of suffocation, positional asphyxia, and death.
Was My Baby Swing Recalled?
The recall involves HONEY JOY COMPANY infant swings, which are labeled with the name “Babyjoy” on the front of the swing and on the seat. The recall includes models BB5569US-GR (gray) and BB5569US-BE (beige). They were sold exclusively on Amazon.com between November 2022 and January 2023.
Babies Can Suffocate to Death in Swings
No injuries or deaths were reported, but babies can suffocate in a HONEY JOY Infant Swing. “Infant fatalities have occurred in inclined sleepers, after the infants rolled from their back to their stomach or side while unrestrained, or under other circumstances,” according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Honey Joy Baby Swings Violate Safety Rules
HONEY JOY Infant swings also violate the mandatory federal Safety Standard for Infant Swings, according to safety officials.
This rule requires labels on infant swings to inform parents and caregivers that they are not safe for sleeping: “This product is not safe for sleep or unsupervised use. If baby falls asleep, remove baby as soon as possible and place baby on a firm, flat sleep surface such as a crib or bassinet.”
