Electrostatic Sprayer Recall

On February 3, 2021, about 405,000 Victory Innovations® and Protexus® electrostatic sprayers were recalled because the battery can overheat, catch on fire, or explode and cause injuries.

What is the Problem?

Victory Innovations reported 37 incidents where the lithium-ion battery pack in the electrostatic sprayers overheated, melted, caught on fire, exploded, or caused property damage. No injuries were reported.

What Electrostatic Sprayers Were Recalled?

The recall involves cordless handheld and backpack electrostatic sprayers under the Victory Innovations® and Protexus® brand-names.

Victory Innovations sprayers have a green and white nozzle, the Victory Innovations logo is on the front or the side, and Model VP-20A or VP-20B printed on the battery pack.

Protexus sprayers have a black and white spray nozzle, the Protexus logo is on the front or the side, and Model PX20A or PX20B on the battery back.

These electrostatic sprayers were sold by chemical and cleaning supply companies nationwide, Amazon.com, SupplyWorks.com (Home Depot Pro Institutional) and Staples.com from January 2016 through November 2020 for $100-$150.

What is Electrostatic Disinfection?

Electrostatic sprayers mix disinfectant chemicals with air and static electricity to quickly clean surfaces. There is an electrode in the spray-nozzle that gives the chemical a positive electrical charge. Once charged, the chemical is sprayed out, where it bonds to negatively-charged surfaces. The spray covers large surfaces more thoroughly.

Where are Electrostatic Sprayers Commonly Used?

Electrostatic sprayers are commonly used to quickly disinfect a lot of high-touch surfaces in high-traffic areas with little nooks and crannies. Here are some examples:

  • Schools
  • Office buildings
  • Bathrooms
  • Hospitals and clinics
  • Gyms and fitness facilities
  • Commercial kitchens and restaurants
  • Transit systems (subways, buses, airplanes)
